Player housing in Shards Online is unique
for many reasons. The biggest reason is because your house and the
decorations/furniture/trophies you put inside it are more real than in
other MMOs. Everything you find or create as you explore the worlds of
Shards Online can be used to decorate your home, inside and out, to make
it stand out. You will hire NPCs to work on your land as guards,
merchants, or even an apprentices to your craft.

Albion Online - How missions work
Lead Game Designer Robin Henkys and Technical Director David Salz star in a new Albion Online
video developer diary to show how missions work and how integral they
are to the overall game economy. According to the press release, players
may also hear just a tad about faction background stories.
Neverwinter : Stronghold
The latest Neverwinter update has now been
deployed and players can take part in 20v20 PvP battles. These
Stronghold Siege battles take place by combining two maps to double the
scale and allows teams to destroy an enemy's stronghold.
Even if you don’t PvP regularly, you should give Stronghold Siege a try. You don’t need to be a whirling machine of death on the front line to make a significant contribution to the battle. There are supplies to be collected and delivered to depots and siege points, pack horses to be corralled or stolen, ballistae to be constructed, golems to be hunted for gold, friendly siege engineers to escort, and enemy engineers to raid for supplies. All of these activities contribute to victory and earn you points.
The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone preview
I recently dived back into The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to check out its first paid expansion, Hearts of Stone, ahead of release. And, if I'm being honest with myself, to paw at the cards of its accompanying physical Gwent deck with intense fascination. Here's how that went.
I don’t know who to trust. It’s all moved so fast, I haven’t even had time to sit down and consider my alliances over a glass of mead and a game of Gwent. I know there’s something off about the way Gaunter O’ Dim’s perpetual half-smile, and my instincts tell me not to take a man known as ‘The Merchant of Mirrors’ at face value. On the other hand, Olgierd Von Everec just burned his house down and chopped a man’s head off simply because his party got a bit out of hand . Geralt is a Witcher of many talents, but choosing his friends is not one of them.
Two hours into Hearts of Stone’s main quest, I’ve slaughtered an enormous toad who was terrorising Oxenfurt folk as a favour to immortal Sean Bean sound-alike Olgierd. I’ve played unwilling host to an amorous ghost keen on using my body as a vessel with which to ravish an old friend of mine. I’ve been kidnapped, tried in vain to learn a foreign tongue, survived a shipwreck and killed on Olifirian mage whose favourite thing in the world was chucking sandstorms at me.
Anyone even slightly worried that CD Projekt Red’s first paid expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt might be superficial, or lacking the base game’s bizarre qualities, can pop their paper bags away from their mouths now.
The main quest I’m bumbling my way through represents the meat, but not the entirety, of Hearts of Stone. Its devs estimate that there are 10 hours of new content to cleave through; new Witcher contracts dotted around, new incidental missions (the exclamation marks that pop up on your map as you gallop about), along with a new character buff system, Runewords. This increase Geralt’s resistance to various attack types, along with his attacking power and magical bonuses, and are unlocked by visiting a Runesmith.
It’s not advised to begin Hearts Of Stone as a level 1 sword-swinger, though. Since the events of the expansion are entirely separate from The Witcher 3’s main plot you can dive in at any point, but CD Projekt Red recommends grinding up to level 30 before taking it on. If you’re nowhere near there, you can begin HoS at level 30 and then take your gear and upgrades into a new base game campaign via New Game +.
However, these particular Yorkshire boozehounds are all equally insistent that they are Olgierd. This hijinks continues for some time until Geralt’s usually ravernous appetite for banter runs dry. When Olgierd does finally show, with the looks of David Beckham and, as previously mentioned, a voice to rival Sean Bean’s in outright northern sex appeal, he immediately reveals himself to be a character worth paying attention to. He’s a great asset to HoS’s narrative.
There's a notably higher cadence of boss battles in the section of HoS I sampled than in The Wild Hunt. The base game had plenty of challenging combat, but it didn't tee up those big ticket monster fights as cinematically as this expansion. It begins ramping up the tension before my fight with the enormo-toad, for example, about ten minutes before I actually meet him. As for the design of said boss battles, it's about patterns and timing. Watching your foe's three or four attack variations, waiting for their vulnerable phase, and using potions and magic to maximise your damage during that brief window of opportunity. Also: rolling around like an idiot.
Mechanically, HoS is an opportunity for the development team who spent years building and refining The Witcher 3's systems to make use of that expertise and create new content in a much tighter development cycle - work on this first expansion began as soon as The Wild Hunt shipped.
For the writers, it's an opportunity to explore characters old and new without worrying about their impact on the wider game's canon, as HoS's events take place in an entirely unconnected timeline. That, apparently, means it's finally time to pen the old 'letting a ghost have his way with your mate using your body as a conduit' quest line, which I genuinely don't know how I feel about.
At Olgier's request, I make my way down to the Von Everec family crypt to raise his brother's spirits, both literally and figuratively. As it happens, said deceased brother has something of an eye for the ladies, and takes a shine to Geralt's buxome friend (although who isn't in The Witcher's world?) Shani, returning from bit-parts in the two previous Witcher titles. Unable to experience phsyical sensations for himself, Von Everec suggests hopping into Geralt's body to partake in the sins of the flesh for himself. In a quasi-gentlemanly manner, he first asks Geralt if he ever harboured feelings for Shani - because if so, using his body to ravish her would be weird, obviously. I'll leave it there, but it's... It's quite a few minutes to play through.
Hearts of Stone releases 13 October as a digital download, but it does come in a boxed edition as well. A box filled with Gwent cards. Yep, Gwent is a real card game now, presented suitably luxuriously by CDP Red. I'm not sure I'm quite passionate enough to play it IRL rather than in an Oxenfurt tavern, but collector's eyes will certainly be drawn to it. Each box contains one faction's deck, comprising 77 cards. The digital download alone is priced at $9.99, and is unreservedly worth the money, whereas the box containing the Gwent deck is considerably pricier at $19.99, which means it's really only for collectors.
Rock Band 4 First Free Update
Rock Band 4's first feature update arrives two months after release and adds variable breakneck speed among other free goodies.
Variable breakneck speed, if you're unfamiliar, lets players control note scrolling speeds for each track independently – a first for Rock Band, and a feature fans have wanted for some time. The post announcing the update also promises new social and competitive features and, "a new mode that changes gameplay in a really significant way that we think people are going to love,” according to Harmonix CEO Steve Janiak.
Rock Band 4 releases October 6 and its first feature update arrives December 8. We've keeping track of Rock Band 4's confirmed track list as new announcements roll in.
WildStar : Crafting
As before, crafting will be reliant on stats and will align with overall itemization changes being made to general character stats. Each stat is, in turn, tied to one of the game's six elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Life and Logic.
For example, Critical Hit is a Fire stat, and Armor is an Earth stat. Circuit Board Sockets have also been connected to WildStar’s six elements. When you start a craft, all your stat sockets will have random elemental types. If you see a Fire socket you’ll be able to choose Critical Hit without penalty.
There is so much more in this truly 'deep' dive into crafting. Other topics include:
- power cores
- schematics
- faster-paced crafting
- tech trees
- materials
- vouchers
- elder game crafting
- master craftsmen
For those who adore crafting, this is a must-read so be sure to head to the WildStar site to check it out.

Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns launch date and Trailer
Heart of Thorns, the long awaited expansion to the now free-to-play MMO Guild Wars 2, will be available to buy on October 23.
The expansion brings with it a bunch of end game content, introducing 10 player PvE raids to the game for the first time. "Leading up to this expansion, one of the things players have been asking us for is more things for their level 80 characters to do and for challenging content," said ArenaNet president and co-founder Mike O'Brien, when we spoke to him about the game going free-to-play.
"They wanted something that required them to band together with their friends that was really challenging to overcome and defeat. We felt like raids was the perfect answer for that."
The launch trailer shows off some of the things you might be going up against in a new CGI launch trailer. It looks like you'll be fighting tree men, tree dragons and massive, erm, tree tree... things. Have a watch:
Twitch - Video On Demand on beta testing
At the recent TwitchCon event, the streaming giant announced that a useful new feature was coming for streamers: Video On Demand playlists.
For streamers, this means they can put together a sequence of their VOD content to play during the hours they are offline. It’s a chance for them to keep their channel running and offer continually rolling content for their fans and viewers, even when the channel is broadcasting live.
The feature extends to the iOS and Android apps, where viewers will also be able to watch the playlists.
Streamers who average 200 live broadcast users can register for the upcoming beta, and the playlist will be gradually introduced to users over the coming weeks.

Romero’s Aftermath open beta launche
There’s a new zombie survival
game on Steam, which normally isn’t cause for a stir. However, Romero’s
Aftermath is a little different for a few reasons. First it’s got a
Romero involved (George Cameron Romero, son of George A Romero of all
those ‘of the Dead’ films). Secondly, it’s the spiritual successor to
The War Z, a game not very many people liked at all.
Aftermath is free-to-play, and its open beta is playable right now. “Romero’s Aftermath costs nothing to download and play, and the only purchasable items are cosmetic skins, customisations and boosts that allow players to acquire certain in-game items more quickly,” says a new post from developer Free Reign on Steam. “Every item can be acquired during play by exploring, looting, trading or defeating other survivalists.”
If you take a look at the game, it looks very similar to The War Z.
The developers note that the gameplay is more arcadey than traditional survival games, and what I played supported that argument, although it didn’t seem to make that much difference. It was still mostly searching through trash for food to eat. There is emphasis on crafting though, and you can create a garden to grow crops at your home base.
The free-to-play side really comes out in a cosmetic element that allows you to put skins on your guns, and it feels like it’s been heavily influenced by Counter Strike: Global Offensive. Personally, I’m not sure if survival players are that bothered about painting their machineguns blue, but I suppose that remains to be seen.

Best free Steam games
Archeage
Archeage, Trion’s free-to-play MMO might start off as a bit traditional,
with its quests and crafting and slightly humdrum fantasy adventures,
but that quickly makes way for high seas escapades as you and some chums
set off on your very own boat, becoming wealthy traders or unfriendly
pirates, preying on other players. Piracy, people. It’s the best thing
you can do in the water.
Warframe
Warframe lets you play as a space ninja, and for a lot of you, that’s probably all that you need to know. Beyond that, it’s a third-person team-based affair that pits you against other space ninjas, all wearing fancy ‘Warframes’ that confer fancy abilities. It’s a slick action game with a hint of MMO about it in the way you collect resources and craft better gear. There’s a bit of grind, admittedly, but hey, space ninjas.
Smite
Smite’s a new arrival one Steam, though it originally launched over a
year ago. It’s a MOBA, but blessed with a twist: you control your divine
heroes like you would in an action game, with the camera positioned
behind them and many of their abilities being skill shots. It’s still
got the familiar stuff, though, like lanes, creeps and items. Here are
the best Smite gods for beginners, to get you started.
War Thunder
War Thunder makes war a wee bit more palatable by removing people and
making war all about sexy machines blowing other sexy machines up. It’s
all World War 2 tanks and planes and, eventually ships, duking it out in
massive maps. It’s all lovely and explosive and a bit grognardy, and I
bet the designers even know how many rivets a Sherman has.
Marvel Heroes 2015
Marvel Heroes started out as a pretty disappointing licensed online
action-RPG and might have faded into obscurity, but Gazillion instead
went back to the drawing board and reinvented the game. With an improved
business model, a more involved community and frequent updates, it’s
been improved dramatically. And hey, who wouldn’t want to punch villains
in the face in a team made up of Winter Soldier, Deadpool (dressed as a
pirate), The Hulk and Spidey. There are tonnes of characters that you
can unlock, and a decent starting roster to boot.
Star Trek Online
Star Trek Online is an often overlooked but still wonderful MMO that gives you a ship, a crew and sends you off on sci-fi adventures that feel authentically Star Trek. Though it’s over five years old, it continues to get regular free updates that add new, elaborate episodic missions, new gear, seasonal events. The story also has a tangible impact on the evolving galaxy. While there is a cash shop and premium ships, the game continues to be extremely generous toward free players.
Path of Exile: Awakening
Path of Exile was, for a while, a cure for those who were disappointed
with Diablo III’s direction. Considerably more grim and gothic than the
competition, Path of Exile is also blessed with one of the most
compelling level up systems in any action-RPG, evocative of Final
Fantasy X’s sphere grid, but infinitely larger and more liberating. A
big expansion dropped a wee while ago, updating the game for everyone.
Card Hunter
Card Hunter is part tabletop roleplaying game, part deck building romp,
part strategy game, but most importantly it’s evocative of sitting
around a table, munching pizza and rolling dice with your pals. The
writing is lighthearted and sometimes funny, while the game itself has
proved to be challenging and clever.
Team Fortress 2
What can one say about Team Fortress 2, Valve’s mega-popular, constantly
evolving shooter? It has many hats. It’s also extremely refined, always
full of players despite launching in 2007, and gets frequent updates to
fatten the game up with even more hats, modes and maps. But despite how
much the game has grown in eight years since it launched, it remains
easy to pick up, especially if you’ve got some chums to play with.
Clicker Heroes
Clicker Heroes is an evil game that feeds addiction. Adding it to this
list makes us pushers, and we’re terribly sorry about that. Like Cookie
Clicker, it’s as simple as it is addictive, tasking you with clicking on
monsters to kill them until you can spend gold to hire new heroes and
do even more damage in a constantly escalating cycle. It’s awful and
extremely hard to give up. Why don’t you take it for a spin?
DC Universe Online
DC Universe Online tasks you with creating your own hero or villain and
then battering enemies across Gotham and Metropolis and even further
afield in action-based combat. Free players get lots of powers, loads of
costume parts to unlock, raids and dungeons, all inspired by DC’s
massive library of comics.
Marvel Puzzle Quest
Marvel Puzzle Quest is one of those deceptively addictive match three
games, but with teams of Marvel heroes and villains, each with unique
powers represented by comic book covers, battling it out on gem-filled
boards. Unfortunately, the game is cursed with a greedy cash shop and
eventually becomes a bit of a grind unless you spend some money – it
takes quite a while to get to that point, however, and up until then,
it’s a great deal of fun and you don’t need to spend a dime.
Dota 2
Dota 2 is massive, second only to League of Legends in the realm of
MOBAs, with millions of people seemingly playing it constantly, always
coming back to check out new characters and new patches. With an
eclectic roster of champions and a huge list of powerful items, you
could spend days and days just thinking about the metagame.
Neverwinter
Neverwinter is more a D&D themed game than a real D&D MMO,
taking the Forgotten Realms and the names of abilities, characters and
all the nomenclature that you’d expect, and then chucking them in a
surprisingly robust action MMO. While free players are more restricted
than premium players, it receives frequent updates that add new quests
and classes that are available to everyone.
PlanetSide 2
PlanetSide 2’s scale is something to behold. Who continents are locked
in constant conflict, with armies clashing over bases, vehicles speeding
across the ground, aircraft lighting up the sky – it’s glorious, until
you die thanks to a sniper sitting a mile away. You’ll want to play with
friends for this one, as the chaos of battle only starts to make sense
when you’re in a squad that communicates.
Transformers Devastation takes us behind the scenes
Platinum are the masters of fast-paced combat. Where From Software takes the prize for deliberate, tactical encounters, Platinum usually deliver similar depth, but at breakneck speed. Mastery comes when each dodge, parry and retaliation become reflex.
I generally find myself warming to their games through extended play. I couldn't get on with Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance at first, but repeated runs were a series of revelations.
What do you mean you can dodge? You can do a slow motion knee slide to deal with rocket launcher troops, chopping their legs to ribbons as you slide past? Each new discovery changes how you play.
This is why I'm hopeful for Transformers: Devastation. It's a genre Platinum excel in, and it's a franchise they clearly love. Each frame of gameplay footage I've seen looks like it was ripped from the classic TV show.
This new video shows a bit of the thought process behind that, as well as explaining the story and how transformations will be used - rather than splitting the game into two separate entities, transformations are integrated into the fabric of combat. It sounds like it could be fun.
Meet Battleborn’s Lothar Rendain
We already know Battleborn is a
multi-character shooter from the creators of Borderlands. We also know
it is not a game about being born in a battle.
With this new trailer comes a whole barrage of new details about the game's antagonist. Firstly, he has a flat head and a really long chin. Secondly, one of his arms is quite a bit longer than the other, which must make buying a suit a right pain in the arse. Lastly, he thinks he's pretty funny, like some idiot videogames writers.
He doesn't come across as good as Handsome Jack in the trailer, that's for sure, but we have only had a taste of old flat head. Have a look for yourself:
"Rendain is one such villain, and while this thoughtful tyrant is dedicated to his cause, he thinks that what he’s doing is for a good reason, and that reason isn’t entirely selfish. And of course, staying true to the studio’s way of telling stories, even Battleborn’s bad guy is infused with Gearbox’s trademark humour."
You'll be able to find out if he's Handsome Jack of Random Cack when you play the Story Mode after the launch on February 9, 2016.

Diablo 3 will give you double Caches for bounties this weekend
Diablo III's 2.3 patch changed the game a fair bit, especially with the addition of Kanai's Cube.
Blizzard want you to be able to take advantage of the cube's transmutation abilities, so they're giving out double Caches for any full set of bounties you complete, for this weekend only.
This applies to both Horadric and Bonus Caches, so make sure you get those bonus acts for extra rewards.
This bonus period begins in the Americas region this Friday, September 25, at 12:01 a.m. PDT and ends on Sunday, September 27 at 11:59 p.m. PDT.
Obviously, to take part in the double Cache festivities, you need to have downloaded the 2.3 patch and be all up-to-date. So if you haven't already done so, now would be a good time.
Times will be the same for whatever region you live in, so in the UK it will be Friday, September 25, at 12:01 a.m. GMT and ends on Sunday, September 27 at 11:59 p.m. GMT, etc. And you thought you were going to sleep tonight.
Minecraft on Windows 10 is getting support
At the Oculus Connect 2's opening talks, Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey revealed that Minecraft Windows 10 Edition will be available on the Rift in spring 2016.
Currently, the Windows 10 Edition is missing some of the features of the main version of the game - it is a port of the mobile version after all - but Microsoft are aiming for parity at some point in the future.
If you already have the Windows 10 edition, you might have realised regular seeds no longer work. Luckily, we've put together a list of some of the best from the Pocket Edition. You can also play it together with you Pocket Edition-owning friends.

Demons Age First Background Story
Bigmoon Entertainment
has revealed the first bit of information about the backstory behind
its forthcoming turn-based RPG, Demons Age, that is to be released in Q1
2016 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
For centuries, Moragon had been a peaceful land where Elves, Dwarves and Halflings have lived their lives with little or no interaction between their respective communities. But when humans arrived, they brought with them trade and in the process established routes from the north to the south of the peninsula, radically changing the lives of the inhabitants as mutual benefits were enjoyed by all throughout. Yet, as is often the case with financial success, greed, jealousy and aggression soon followed, resulting in vicious power struggles amongst the different beings of Moragon. Taking advantage of the disarray, the opportunistic Vazuhr, the Lord of Darkness who had lain dormant for thousands of years in the depths of Moragon, seized the chance to rise again. He soon found a perfect ally in Zogalon, a powerful warlord who had already conquered the biggest port in Moragon and recruited Orcs into his ranks. Together, Vazuhr and Zogalon managed to open the portals of hell and unleash Vazuhr’s legions, but the people of Moragon stood firm and defeated the army of demons, banishing Vazuhr once again to the depths of hell, and restoring peace to the peninsula. After a century of peace, rumors of strange events and demon sightings made their way to the current king, Konrad Lijak, who investigated the rumours. The news that was delivered to him by his mage, Kaldulor, drove him insane, and Konrad dissapeared without a trace. Despite Kaldulor’s attempts to explain what had happened, he was accused of treason and the King’s children, Princess Pellora and Prince Karan, were left to to rule in his stead. They tried to re-establish order in the peninsula, however the news that a sect is trying to open the gates of hell to unleash demons on Moragon plunges the kingdom into further chaos. In the midst of this chaos, you are washed ashore when the ship you were being held prisoner on runs aground during a terrible storm. You wake up on the beaches of this dangerous land without weapons or equipment, making your first task to find something in the wreckage to defend yourself against the monsters of Moragon. Thus, your adventure begins.

If Fallout's vaults exist will you live in there
Vivos luxury bunkers are as
close to real life Fallout vaults I've ever seen. Carved out of a
mountain in Germany, measuring 250,000 square foot, containing 80
apartments, and filled with the rich, I can't see Vivos functioning as a
democracy for long. Someone will want to be the Overseer.
Amuse had a chat to billionaire Robert Vicino, the mastermind of the project, to find out his plans should such a situation arise, among other things.
The project began in 2007 when Vicino decided to act on a "message from above" that he received 30 years ago. He believes an asteroid will hit the Atlantic on September 23, so there isn't long to get your name down. The shelter is prepared for other apocalyptic events, like nuclear war, or electromagnetic pulses, just in case his information is incorrect, and you'll even be picked up in a private jet and flown there if your application is successful.
Though you might want to hold off for now, as Vicino has so far only accepted the ultra wealthy. People with royal lineage and from the Forbes rich list have already signed up. They can afford to after all, with each apartment costing between €2.5 and €5million.
Trapped inside with a private security force and the mega elite of society? No thanks, mate. I'll take my chances with the cannibals, the scavengers and irradiated beasts.
When it comes to the behaviour of the residents, Vicino is much more optimistic than I am and doesn't seem worried about being usurped: "Nature will take its course," he says to Amuse. "Usually in the worst of times, the best of people will come out. Even the wealthy guys will take off their crowns and their gold, roll up their sleeves and fix the toilet if they need to."
Whatever helps you sleep at night, pal.
With doors that are two foot thick, nuclear blast-proof, weigh 100 tonnes and take one hour to open by hydraulics and 24 hours to open by hand crank, he'd better hope he's right.
They have enough food and supplies for three years, so I imagine emerging after that time would be just like your first look at the open-world in a Fallout game. For Vicino's sake, I hope all that money means something in the post-apocalypse. I'm saving up bottle caps.
